This fall, The Rensselaerville Institute (TRI) is partnering with 31 schools in Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, and New York to boldly improve their academic performance over a two-year time period.
In order for change to seed deep roots, it must be owned locally. This is why we make sure that not only does student achievement go up – but so does the capacity in the people who will keep that upward momentum after we are gone. The role of School Turnaround is to be the catalyst and their partner.
Each principal in the School Turnaround core program is assisted, supported, and challenged by a turnaround specialist. Our turnaround specialists have the expertise that comes only from having turned around similar schools themselves. This partnership is the foundation of our work with schools. Turnaround specialists help their principals lead breakthrough changes that are focused on results.
The 2017-2018 school year represents the largest number of schools that TRI has served at once:
In Atlanta Public Schools, nine schools will begin their second year of turnaround and five schools are beginning their first year.
In Hawaii where we’ve partnered with the state Department of Education since 2007, five Maui schools are participants in our core program.
In Clarksdale County, Miss., two schools are beginning their first year.
In Guilford County, North Carolina, four schools are beginning their first year.
In Gadsden County, Fla., four schools are beginning their first year.
In Roosevelt, New York, two charter schools are beginning their first year.
About School Turnaround
For over 16 years TRI’s School Turnaround has worked in some of the country’s most beleaguered schools that all share one thing in common—an urgent need to raise student achievement. Schools gain an average of 9.6 percent in reading and math for 4th and 8th grade in one year. We have turned around 242 schools since 2001.
